Lacee Bethea – Pelaajan tarina

Laceen jalkapalloura alkoi, kun hän oli vasta nelivuotias. Hänen äitinsä ilmoitti hänet paikallisen kirkon jalkapalloryhmään nimeltä Upward.

Urheilu oli luonnollinen osa hänen lapsuuttaan. Laceella on neljä veljeä, jotka kaikki pelasivat amerikkalaista jalkapalloa, ja hän itse harrasti useita urheilulajeja, kuten voimistelua, koripalloa ja yleisurheilua. Aluksi hän aikoi jatkaa yleisurheilua yliopistossa jalkapallon ohella, mutta tajusi lopulta, että molempien yhdistäminen olisi liikaa.

Lacee sanoo, että hänen äitinsä on ollut hänen elämänsä vaikutusvaltaisin henkilö. Äiti ajoi häntä lapsuudessa yli tunnin matkan harjoituksiin, ei koskaan jättänyt yhtään ottelua väliin ja on aina ollut hänen suurin tukijansa.

Lukioaikana Lacee pelasi varsinaisen jalkapallokauden aikana koulunsa joukkueessa ja kausien välissä Ohio Premier Soccer Clubissa ECNL-sarjassa (Elite Club National League). Näin hän pystyi kilpailemaan ympäri vuoden.

Hän sai opiskelupaikan Bowling Green Staten yliopistosta, jossa hän opiskeli rikosoikeutta ja pelasi samalla yliopistojoukkueessa. Lacee valmistui yliopistosta neljässä vuodessa.

Yliopiston jälkeen hänen ammattilaisuransa alkoi ulkomailla. Hän pelasi noin kuusi kuukautta Portugalin BPI-liigassa Albergaria/Duritin riveissä ennen siirtymistään Suomeen. Pelattuaan vuoden PK-35 Helsingissä hän siirtyi lopulta HJK:hon.

Suomessa vietetty aika on saanut hänet huomaamaan useita kulttuurieroja Yhdysvaltoihin verrattuna. Julkinen liikenne ja jokapäiväinen kommunikaatio ovat suurimpia eroja. Lacee sanoo amerikkalaisten olevan usein puheliaampia, ja suomalaiset eivät aina oikein tiedä, miten reagoida kohteliaisuuksiin.

Hän on havainnut eroja myös pelikentällä. Laceen mukaan Suomessa jalkapallossa painotetaan enemmän teknistä osaamista, kun taas Yhdysvalloissa keskitytään usein enemmän pelin taktisiin osa-alueisiin.

Vaikka hän nauttii elämästään Suomessa, on asioita, joita hän kaipaa kotoa. Eniten hän kaipaa perhettään ja sitä, että he voisivat olla katsomossa kannustamassa häntä.

Laceen unelma on pelata National Women’s Soccer Leaguessa. Tarkemmin hän toivoo pääsevänsä edustamaan uutta joukkuetta, jota parhaillaan rakennetaan hänen kotikaupungissaan Columbusissa, Ohiossa.

Neuvo, jonka hän pyrkii muistamaan joka päivä, on keskittyä siihen, mitä voi itse hallita. Lacee korostaa, että valmentajia tai muita ulkoisia tekijöitä ei voi hallita, mutta omaan toimintaansa ja asenteeseensa voi vaikuttaa.

”Jos pidät kiinni oikeasta asenteesta, sinusta tulee tulevaisuudessa vain parempi ihminen ja parempi pelaaja”, hän sanoo.

Lacee Bethea’s soccer journey began when she was just four years old. Her mother enrolled her in a local church soccer group called Upward. 

Sports were a natural part of life growing up. Lacee has four brothers who all played American football, and she herself was involved in several sports, including gymnastics, basketball, and track and field. In fact, she initially planned to continue track in college alongside soccer but eventually realized that balancing both would be too much. 

Lacee says that her mother has been the most influential person in her life. She drove her over an hour to practices growing up, never missed a game, and has always been her biggest supporter. 

During high school, Lacee played for her school team during the main soccer season and for Ohio Premier Soccer Club in the ECNL (Elite Club National League) during the offseason. The arrangement allowed her to compete year-round. 

She earned a place at Bowling Green State University, where she studied criminal justice while playing collegiate soccer. Lacee graduated in four years. 

After college, her professional career began abroad. She spent approximately six months playing in Portugal’s BPI League for Albergaria/Durit before moving to Finland. After spending a year with PK-35 Helsinki, she eventually joined HJK.

Reflecting on her time in Finland, she has noticed several cultural differences compared to the United States. Public transportation stands out as one of the biggest contrasts, as does everyday communication. She says that Americans are often more talkative and that sometimes Finnish people don’t quite know how to react to compliments. 

She has also observed differences on the pitch. According to Lacee, soccer in Finland places greater emphasis on technical ability, while in the United States there is often a stronger focus on the tactical aspects of the game. 

While she enjoys life in Finland, there are things she misses from home. Most of all, she misses her family and the opportunity to have them cheering her on from the stands.  

Looking ahead, Lacee has a clear dream for the future: to play in the National Women’s Soccer League. More specifically, she hopes to represent the new team currently being established in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio. 

The advice she tries to live by every day is simple: control the controllable. Lacee highlights that you can’t control coaches or other outside factors, but you can control yourself and your attitude. “If you stick with that mentality, you will only become a better person and a better player in the future,” she says.

Do you have a pre-game ritual? 

–  I always get Subway (sandwich) either on game day or the day before. It has been my tradition since college. 

What motivates you on days when you don’t feel like training? 

– I think about my younger self. She would be so excited to see me living my dream as a professional soccer player, and that motivates me to keep going. 

What’s a moment you’ll never forget from your career? 

–  Winning the MAC Championship in 2021 is a moment I’ll never forget. 

What’s a lesson soccer has taught you that applies to everyday life? 

– Control the controllables. You can’t always control coaches’ decisions, or every situation, but you can control your attitude, effort and how you respond! 

When or where do you listen to audio books? 

– Usually when I’m vacation or looking for something more engaging than another regular TV show.  

If you were the main character in a book, what would the genre be? 

– Definitely a romantic action novel! I’ve always loved strong, adventurous characters like Tris Prior, and I’d want a story full of action, challenges, and of course a great love story.
